Events are starting to sell out. Sorry, we don’t do a waitlist. You are welcome to come and stand in the “Standby” line at Ski Hi where the buses load. If there are cancelations, you might be loaded.  The line is formed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please review the schedule below and determine which tours, talks and movies you would like to attend. Please note that events may overlap each other so don’t over-schedule yourself. Give your self at least half an hour between tours to get refreshments and use the restrooms. You need 20 minutes to drive between tours and the talks and movies, as they are at separate venues. Once you know your choices click on the link below and purchase your tickets on Eventbrite.

Don’t wait, tours will sell out quickly online. Tickets for the keynote, talks, and movies can be purchased as a combination series ticket. Or the keynote ticket can be purchased separately. Otherwise, tickets will be available at the door for the other talks and movies. The Kid’s Movie Friday night is FREE to all.

FREE Kid’s Movie and Coloring Contest Awards Rango (Rated PG, 1hr 51 min) A good old fashioned western, the film centers on Rango (voiced by Johnny Depp), a chameleon who accidentally ends up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost populated by the desert’s most wily and whimsical creatures.  Rango, the less-than-courageous lizard, suddenly finds he stands out and is the last hope the town has been waiting for.  Sheriff Rango is forced to play his new role and save the town from a developer’s water grab. Winners of the Kid’s Crane Coloring Contest will precede the movie.

SOLD OUT Elephant Rocks Tour See and learn about sculpted massive boulders, unique geology and biology. BLM staff will give a talk about the area and then you are free to explore on your own or with staff.   Porta Potti will be on site.

Talk: Grains for Cranes Max Ciaglo -Colorado Land Trust – Come learn about the history of Sandhill Cranes and barley production in Colorado, and how our program is working to ensure that Cranes will always migrate through this mountain valley.

SLV GO Trail Showcase – A guided tour around one of the SLV’s newest trails, the Malm Trail. This tour is lead by SLV Great Outdoors (SLV GO)  and will cover their work, an overview of the Malm trail and where you can find more resources for recreational opportunities throughout the San Luis Valley.

Meet at the  Alamosa Depot Visitor Center (610 State Ave, Alamosa) to carpool from there. Dress for the weather and be prepared for a short 1-2mile walk on flat terrain. For more information about SLV GO see https://slvgo.com/. FREE, No need to register.

 Rio Grande Watershed Conservation & Education Initiative Open House Take a break between presentations at the Vali 3 Theater featuring activities for all ages at the  Beverages and snacks will be offered, along with crafts, coloring, and activities that will be fun for more than just kids. RGWCEI works closely with conservation districts to promote stewardship of natural resources for the entire San Luis Valley and values the role that agriculture plays in promoting habitat for sandhill cranes. Test your knowledge on crops, plant a seed to take home, or just visit the office to learn more about agriculture and education in the San Luis Valley!

Movie: Bird of Prey Bird of Prey weaves stunning natural history footage of the critically endangered Great Philippine Eagle with the remarkable story of wildlife cinematographer Neil Rettig and a small group of conservationists from the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) who work tirelessly to save the bird from extinction. 1 hour and 34 minutes

Talk: Dealing with Water Scarcity  Cleave Simpson – General Manager of the Rio Grande Water Conservation District (RGWCD), Alamosa, CO. Come learn about water in the Rio Grande Basin and the San Luis Valley, and the challenges surface water users and groundwater users face in an over appropriated system.  The San Luis Valley basin is hydrologically complicated with a shallow “unconfined” aquifer and a deeper “confined” aquifer. Learn how we are actively working to address the decade’s old issue of groundwater/surface water interactions as well as creating and maintaining healthy aquifer systems.

Keynote Speaker Teddy Roosevelt as portrayed by Kurt Skinner – “I So Declare It!”: Theodore Roosevelt’s Conservation Crusade For America.  TR imprinted his love of the natural world onto America – as “wilderness warrior” President, he fought for our national treasures and left a legacy of federal resource conservation and wildlife protection.

SOLD OUT Scott Miller Archeological Tour Bus tour to visit this rich archaeological site with a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service archaeologist. Be prepared for a moderate 1.5-mile walk over uneven ground. In case of bad weather or snow on the ground, a talk with artifacts to view will be at a refuge building. Bring water.
